    Then & Now: Potential Nassau Historical Markers on the Motor Parkway Trail

    Nassau County is currently developing a master plan for a continuous multi-use Motor Parkway Trail. Part of the plan calls for the placement of markers "at the location of historical remnants and will serve as a way to educate the public on the history of the corridor as the original Long Island Motor Parkway..". These are my recommendations for 21 historic markers:

    The Northern State Motor Parkway Bridge in Lake Success

    Mr. Bond, after rejecting a proposal to upgrade and expand the Long Island Motor Parkway, construction on the Northern State Parkway began in July 1931 at a ceremony jointly attended by Long Island State Park Commissioner Robert Moses and Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt. As part of the construction, Moses promised to build two bridges where the Motor Parkway crossed the Northern State Parkway near Lakeville Road and New Hyde Park Road.

    The Motor Parkway Bridges over the Northern State Parkway

    Ron, with the construction of the Northern State Parkway in the early 1930s, Robert Moses agreed to build two Motor Parkway bridges over the new parkway, one just west of Lakeville Road and another west of New Hyde Park Road. At this section of the Motor Parkway, the right-of way did not cross the Long Island Expressway. Here's the amazing supporting photos.

    The Twin Locomobile Vanderbilt Cup Racers

    For the 1906 American Elimination Trial and the Vanderbilt Cup Race, Locomobile built two identical cars, one to race and the other, back-up. This photo is the only known evidence of the two cars together preparing for the American Elimination Trial. Note that both cars have the #12 on their radiators.
